Turtle Observation Camp at Rekawa Excursion, Sri Lanka

Region: south-coast | Location: Tangalla
Sri Lanka Turtle Observation Camp at Rekawa
 Other regions: ancient-cities | capital-colombo | east-coast | hill-country | west-coast
The project ‘Turtle Watch’ is run by the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) which was started in 1996. REKAWA is located about 10 km east of the south coast town of Tangalle. Part of the ‘Turtle Watch’ program on the Rekawa beach, visitors are educated and can observe the ancient ritual of turtles coming ashore and laying eggs. This project was started to protect sea turtles in their natural habitat while providing an alternative source of income to people formerly dependent on the illegal collection of turtle eggs.

Five out of the seven species of endangered marine turtles come to nest in this part of the Sri Lankan coastline; making it an ideal location to marvel at one of nature’s most fascinating creatures.

Luxury camping at Rekawa is an ideal location to be based for turtle watching – Luxury camping is camping in style! The site is set up prior to your arrival, with everything from the kitchen sink, chairs and tables, toilets, showers and cold beer being transported in. In the evening you can enjoy a hearty barbecue meal in a magical setting - the whole area is lit up with traditional flame torches and a roaring campfire. So sit back, relax and let our experienced staff cater to your every need.
