Kelaniya Buddhist Temple (Kelaniya Maha Viharaya) Excursion, Sri Lanka

Region: capital-colombo | Location: Kelaniya
 Other regions: ancient-cities | east-coast | hill-country | south-coast | west-coast
Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is situated six miles from Colombo, the ancient Kelani Raja Maha Viharaya with a history that dates back nearly 2,563 years standing beside the Kelani River.

According to the history, Lord Buddha stopped at this ancient temple during a visit to Sri Lanka in 523 BC where he was invited to preach by the king. The history records that the original Dagoba at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached.

This temple is also famous for its image of the reclining Buddha and paintings, which represent important events in the life of the Buddha and history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. You’ll see a series of wall paintings in the interior that date from the mid-20th century.

Each year, on the full moon day of January, the annual procession known as the ‘Duruthu Perahera’ is held. The procession displays ancient traditions and highlights the site’s cultural heritage. The Duruthu Perahera is seconded only to the Kandy Perahera in September. A grand procession of drummers, dancers, torch-bearers, elephants and acrobats make this Perahera the most colourful and popular low-country procession of its kind in Sri Lanka.

Half-day and full-day excursions can be arranged from either Negombo, Colombo or Mount Lavinia.

Location

Kelaniya Buddhist Temple is located just over 10 miles to the south of Negombo and about 20 miles north of Colombo city.
