Sri Lanka Capital Colombo City Tour
 Other regions: ancient-cities | east-coast | hill-country | south-coast | west-coast
It was in the year 1517 that this unassuming coastal city got its boost to the glorious metropolis Sri Lanka knows today. With the Portuguese building a fort here as their main base for expansion into the lowlands of Sri Lanka, Colombo started to gain fame and prosperity by way of trade and maritime commerce. Colombo was later honoured with the title of Capital of Ceylon in the year 1815. Colombo is now a chic, cosmopolitan metropolis where much of the latest in fashion and technology first enter the islands shops and stores. With heavy traffic during the morning work dash, noon school rush and evening home dash the city is always busy for the majority of its 24 hours. Travel in and around Colombo can be easily arranged by taking either the nimble ‘tuk tuk’ (trishaws or three wheelers), posh and comfy taxi cabs, vans or busses which barrel down the road and get you where you want to be in record time. Colombo is a confirmed stop in any holiday to Sri Lanka.

Eating

Colombo has the best selection of restaurants in Sri Lanka, offering not only Sri Lankan food but also Italian, German, Swiss, French, Indian and Chinese to name but a few. There are a variety of places to eat some of the tastiest food to be found ranging from restaurants found in the five star hotels to hawkers stalls set up on the corners and footpaths of the city.

Fort

During the Dutch and Portuguese eras 'Fort' was indeed a fort although now it is Colombo's commercial centre displaying buildings of modern marble and glass.
