|
| Region: hill-country | Location: Nuwara Eliya | | | Other regions: ancient-cities | capital-colombo | south-coast | west-coast | At the heart of the southern hill country is Nuwara-Eliya, Sri Lanka’s highest town and a favourite hill station during British colonial period.
Nuwara-Eliya is Sri Lanka's picturesque hill resort 1,890 metres above sea level is renowned for its perennial spring-like climate & carpets of lush green tea. The town is still touted as ‘Little England’, an illusion maintained by the presence of one of Asia's finest of 18 hole golf course, a racecourse, the Victoria park, Hakgala botanical gardens and excellent trout fishing in nearby lakes and rivers.
Temperature in Nuwara-Eliya can drop to close to freezing at nights and it is common to see smoke rising from the chimneys of many of the Tudor-style manors. Adding to the Nuwara-Eliya town’s atmosphere is the spectacle of its townsfolk wrapped up in winter jackets and woolly hats, carting great bundles of turnips, leeks, marrows and cabbages to and from the markets. Nuwara-Eliya is a great place to explore the surrounding countryside and there are many walks on offer, including hiking around the lower slopes of the thickly forested Mount Pidurutalagala, at 2,555m the island’s highest peak. A visit to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, a short distance from Nuwara-Eliya, is also recommended. |
| Nuwara Eliya City and History | The city was founded by non other than illustrious Samuel Baker, the legendary discoverer of Lake Albert and the explorer of the Nile in 1846. Such was the salubrious climate that in no time Nuwara Eliya became the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, called Little England then, was also the ideal hill country retreat where the British colonialists could immerse in their pastimes such as fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf and cricket.
Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Grand Hotel, Hill Club, Town Post Office and even new hotels are often built and furnished in the colonial style such as the Alpine Hotel. Anyone who visits the city can wallow in its nostalgia of bygone days by visiting these land mark buildings. Many private homes still maintain their old English-style lawns and gardens. |
