Sri Lanka ancient-cities
Anuradhapura - the most extensive of the Sri Lankan ancient cities. The city was said to be a model of planning - there were hostels and hospitals and a water supply was assured by the construction of reservoirs. By the middle of the third century BC the fame of the island’s first capital had spread to the distant lands of the Mediterranean. Anuradhapura was to continue as the national capital for over 1300 years up to the 10th Century AD when repeated innovations by Indians and a struggle for royal succession resulted in the capital being withdrawn to Polonnaruwa. It still remains home to the sacred bo tree, the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world which was brought to Sri Lanka over 2000 years ago by the sister of Mahinda who introduced the Budda's teachings to the country. Today the monuments of Anuradhapura’s heyday survive for you to visit surrounded by the solemn umbrage of trees and an ancient parkland - it is essential viewing!
Sri Lanka ancient-cities
Polonnaruwa - 140Km north-east of Kandy in the Hill Country and 104Km south east of Anuradhapura is Polonnaruwa. The second seat of rule and a medieval capital: 11-12th Century. The city in its day was fortified with three concentric walls, beautified with parks and gardens and sanctified by many a shrine and sacred place. The majestic King’s Council chamber, the rock cut Lotus Bath, the statue of Parakrama Bahu (one of the great kings of Sri Lanka), the rock-cut sculptures of Gal Vihare (Temple) and the Sea of Parakrama (a vast man-made reservoir) are really memorable sights.
Sri Lanka ancient-cities
Sigiriya - Sigiriya is a fascinating rock fortress which was the stronghold of a fifth century king who sought refuge. It is one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. Approach the rock through the beautiful water gardens before making the 200 meter ascent to the three acre summit . Before reaching the royal palace at the summit the visitor passes a gallery of heavenly maidens painted upon the rock face and a wall of graffiti where visitors of 1000 years ago felt compelled to inscribe their impressions of the maidens in the gallery. The visitor then passes through two enormous lion paws, the remains of a gigantic brick lion before making the final approach to the summit where magnificent views of the surrounding jungle await.
Sri Lanka ancient-cities
Dambulla - 12 miles from Sigiriya is Dambulla which is an archaeological treasure. It is a famous cave temple, 500 feet high and dating back to the 1st century BC when King Valagam Bahu, driven out of Anuradhapura, took refuge here. When he regained his throne he converted the caves into a magnificent rock temple. Later kings made further improvements to the temple, including gilding of the interior, earning the name Ran Giri (Golden Rock). With its series of spectacular caves and a painted area of cover 20,000 sq.ft. of Buddhist murals Dambulla is an amazing place - Both Dambulla and Sigiriya can be viewed on the same day.

Nuwara Eliya - You cannot avoid Nuwara Eliya if you are travelling to the Hill Country. Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by hills and tea plantations. It is of course here that the island's world famous tea is grown and produced. The town of Nuwara Eliya is the perfect getaway from Sri Lanka's tropical heat. The town enjoys spring-like weather throughout the year. A favourite retreat of the British during colonial times, Nuwara Eliya is dotted with English country style houses and sprawling gardens, earning it the name Little England. Stop by the well-maintained Central Park, which is awash with flowers between March and May. Make time for an evening stroll on the numerous walking paths around Gregory's Lake, which is located just south of the town.

The summit of the peak treats the visitor to tremendous views across the hill country as it rises to the east and the land to the west as it meets the sea and allows visitors to view Colombo on a clear day.

The Horton Plains National Park is a misty grassland plateau at an elevation of more than 2000 m (6,500 ft), about 20 km from Nuwara Eliya. It consists of grasslands interspersed with areas of forest and some unusual vegetation that grows only in high altitudes. From here rises Sri Lanka's second and third highest mountains. The plains afford some excellent walks, the silence is strange and mysterious. The most amazing feature of Horton Plains is the World's End where the southern part of the plains comes to a sudden end and drops almost straight down for 700 m. Dawn is the ideal time to view this site when the mountains are free of mist and the sun is just rising. The dense forests are home to deer, jackal, the shaggy bear-monkey, sambhur and leopard. The plains are popular with birdwatchers.

When booking travel arrangements our contract with you begins when we receive your payment of a deposit or full payment and we have sent an invoice to you as confirmation of this. Once the contract is made we are responsible for providing the travel arrangements you have booked and you are responsible to us to pay for them. In parties of two or more people the person who makes the booking, accepts responsibility for making payments to us for all members of the party.

2. How to make a booking

To secure a booking the company initially requires notice from you of your booking request. The booking will only be secured once both you and the company have confirmed the travel arrangements and the company is satisfied that the correct deposit/payment has been received.

3. Payments and Deposits

For holiday, flight, hotel or insurance only bookings, the full payment must be made immediately after you and the company have confirmed the travel arrangements.

For group bookings with 15 people or greater, a deposit of 60% of the total cost of a booking is required for all bookings taken more than 180 days (about 6 months) before departure. The balance of the cost of your travel arrangements must be paid at least 90 days (about 4 months) before departure and if it is not paid by that point your booking and contract with us will be cancelled and we will retain deposits made for the booking. If you make a booking within 90 days of your departure date then you must pay the full cost at the booking stage.

Package holidays and flight only fares may be based on instant purchase tickets or ticketing deadlines soon after purchase. If a booking is made on such a fare, full payment for the flight or flight inclusive element of the package will be required in accordance with these restrictions. You will be notified by a member of our reservations staff if you have booked such a fare.

4. Additional Charges

We reserve the right to change our prices at any time before you book. If we do you will be told of the revised price applicable to your booking before you commit yourself.

Payment By Credit Card

We will not accept Credit Card payment if the date of payment is within 45 days of your departure date. In this case you must make payment using either cheque, bank transfer or cash. Payment by cash can only be accepted at one of our offices.

As soon as you have paid your deposit or full payment, your holiday arrangements have been confirmed and we have sent an invoice to you as confirmation of this, we guarantee that the price of your holiday will not be subject to any surcharges excepting for :-
(i) variations in transportation costs, including the cost of fuel;
(ii) variations in dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports.

If the above price variations increase the price of your holiday by more than 10% you will be entitled to;
i) take our offered substitute package of equivalent or superior quality if we are able to provide one
ii) take our offered substitute package of lower quality if we are able to provide one and accept a refund from us of the difference in price between the price of the package purchased and the substitute one offered
iii) cancel your holiday with a full refund of all monies paid

We do not pay compensation or permit cancellation of travel arrangements where any changes to the price of your holiday occurs by reason of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control or that of our suppliers, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised such as war, a state of war, riot, fire, civil strife, industrial action, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, adverse weather conditions or other conditions amounting to force majeure. In these circumstances we will also not pay any resulting expenses or additional costs.

4.1 Despatch

If tickets are lost or delayed in the post, airlines will make a charge for reissue. We therefore recommend that all tickets are sent by registered post. A charge of £5 per booking is made for this service, if only airline tickets are purchased. For holiday bookings with flights, initial posting of the tickets will be FREE of charge. Any subsequent posting, a charge of £5 per booking is made for this service. If clients decline this service they will then be responsible for any additional charges arising from lost or delayed tickets.

5. Changes by us to, or cancellation by us of, your travel arrangements

It is very unlikely that we will have to make any changes to, or to cancel, your holiday. However, we do plan arrangements a long time in advance and we use the services of independent suppliers, such as hotels, airlines etc., over whom we have no direct control. If it is the case that changes need to be made, or we need to cancel your arrangements, we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most of these changes are minor, and we do not pay compensation for minor changes, but whenever possible we will advise you. Any flight timings and carriers in the brochure or on our websites are subject to change as a result of airline procedures and these details are given for guidance only. Final details will be shown on your tickets.

If a SIGNIFICANT CHANGE to your holiday occurs or becomes necessary, we will inform you as soon as possible if there is time before departure. When a SIGNIFICANT CHANGE occurs (such as a change of resort, hotel or a change of flight time of more than 12 hours) or we have to cancel your arrangements, you will have the choice of:-

i) accepting the change of arrangements
ii) taking our offered substitute package of equivalent or superior quality if we are able to provide one
iii) taking our offered substitute package of lower quality if we are able to provide one and accept a refund from us of the difference in price between the price of the package purchased and the substitute one offered
iv) cancelling your holiday with a full refund of all monies paid

We do not pay compensation or permit cancellation of travel arrangements where any changes to the price of your holiday occurs by reason of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control or that of our suppliers, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised such as war, a state of war, riot, fire, civil strife, industrial action, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, adverse weather conditions or other conditions amounting to force majeure. In these circumstances we will also not pay any resulting expenses or additional costs.

6. Changes by you to your travel arrangements

If after our confirmation has been issued you wish to change any part of your travel arrangements, we will make every effort to help you do this, subject to availability and the type of ultimate product suppliers (airlines, car-hire companies, hotels etc), you have chosen and their cancellation/change charges details of which will be provided to you on request at any time including prior to booking. If you want to change any details regarding your flight reservation, airline rules mean that we may have to cancel your original flight and purchase a new one and you will be required to pay the full flight cost again. Please note for flights some airline rules and systems mean that it is impossible to transfer a seat to another person.

We will charge you an administration charge of £75.00 per booking for flight inclusive arrangements and £40.00 per booking for ground only arrangements, and you will be liable to pay the hotel, car-hire, airline or other ultimate product charges resulting from your changes. NB: Once Airline Tickets are issued, usually 28 days prior to departure, changes are not permitted. Changes after airline tickets are issued will result in a 100% cancellation charge.

7. Cancellation by you

If you wish to cancel your travel arrangements for any other reason than for their being additional charges (see clause 4) or alterations (clause 5) we must be notified in writing. The cancellation will take effect from the day we receive written confirmation from you. As this incurs administrative costs we will retain your deposit (and insurance premium if applicable) and you will be additionally liable for the cancellation charges levied on us as a result of your cancellation by the airline, hotel, car-hire company or other supplier involved in your booking, in regard to which we will take all reasonable steps to ensure are kept to a minimum. After ticket issue cancellation will result in loss of 100% of total cost of all travel arrangements in most cases.

8. The Company's Liability to you

We accept liability for matters which arise as a result of our negligence and/or breach of our contractual duty to exercise care in making arrangements for you, including any acts or omissions by our employees or agents. We also accept liability for any negligent act or omission of our suppliers who may operate elements of your holiday arrangements, including any claim involving death, personal injury or illness. However, in respect of carriage by air, sea and rail the company limits its liability to the extent of the relevant international convention. You are subjected to the terms and conditions of the carriers concerned some of which exclude or limit liability in respect of death, injury, delay and loss or damage to baggage. It is also important to note that if delays diversions or rescheduling or cancellation of your arrangements occurs by reason of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control or that of our suppliers, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised such as war, a state of war, riot, fire, civil strife, industrial action, terrorist activity, natural or nuclear disaster, adverse weather conditions or other conditions amounting to force majeure we will not be liable. In these circumstances we will also not pay any resulting expenses or additional costs.

The company does not accept liability for travel documents which are not received due to failure of a third party supplier to fulfil their obligations e.g. the post office, courier etc.

9. Claims and Complaints

If you have a complaint whilst on holiday you must tell the relevant supplier (e.g. hotel) or our agent immediately. Most problems can be solved on the spot but if after you return home you are still not satisfied you must write to our Customer Relations Department at 169 High Street, Barnet, Herts, EN5 5SU, within 28 days of your return.

10. Brochures and Web-Sites

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of descriptions and information. However, we are not always able to control all the components of the holiday arrangements and it is possible that an advertised facility may be withdrawn or changed, due to weather conditions, lack of demand or for maintenance, renovations etc.... We will advise you if we become aware of a major change. We will make all reasonable efforts to inform you of any changes at any stage in your booking prior to travel. We will advise you if we become aware of a major change eg a change of resort, hotel, or a change of flight time of more than 12 hours, and if any major changes occur after you have confirmed booking you should refer to clause 5 of these Terms and Conditions for the options available to you in these circumstances.

I had a fantastic holiday

I could NOT find a big bull elephant to take me through the tea plantations BUT I had a fantastic holiday. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was with everything you arranged. I was met at the airport by a really lovely guy with a cold car (the heat and humdity was blistering when I arrived at Columbo around 7am). He was very knowledgeable and a great, safe driver - despite countless tuk tuks trying to vie with him for the road - as well as buses and trucks and goats and cows - a lovely man. When I arrived at the Riverina although tired I soon perked up. The hotel was far nicer than I imagined and the staff very welcoming. The room wasn't the best (as it was located in the back of the hotel) but spotlessly clean, and perfect. The food in the restaurant was fabulous every day - I could not fault anything! I met with a rep from the office after a few days - Namil - I think and he booked a car and driver to take me to the Sinharaja Rain Forest - a fabulous day out despite the leeches! The holiday was perfect Sanjay and I will highly recommend Elegant Travels to my friends - already have one couple interested in trying Sri Lanka - after being hooked on Kerala for the past few years. I am also thinking of going back myself towards the end of the year and taking my mum along. Its a beautiful island - warm and lovely people - pure paradise for me! I didn't do too much other than rent a bike from a local bicycle repair shop one day - for $3 - but it had no brakes or gears but got me from village to village. I was planning a trip to Hikkadua on the train but never managed to get that far. Only complaint was the return trip to the airport - another guy picked me up at 12 noon from the hotel for a 9pm flight - so I had a 5 hour wait but its a smashing airport - great shops and duty free so I actually didn't mind it one bit! Hats off to you Sanjay and to Elegant Travel. Thanks again.

we loved the island and had a truly memorable holiday

Forgive the delay in writing you this but I managed to pick up a bug on the aeroplane journey home and spent most of last week feeling rather poorly but it did not diminish the most fabulous time we have had in Sri Lanka. Thank you for all the effort and help you gave us in planning our holiday, we loved the island and had a truly memorable holiday. Niro was the most fabulous guide we could have wished for and we loved all the places we stayed in especially the unique Warwick Gardens! The overbooking at the Negombo Beach meant we were able to see Galle which we loved and thus feel that we travelled all over the island. I think the south coast is well worth the trip, the beaches were spectacular and Galle is becoming a very attractive town with its lovely shops and bars and all the refurbishment of the old quarter. We have lots of great memories and photos and have been telling all our friends to visit Sri Lanka! Kind regards, Louise Selby (www.louiseselby.com)

Please could you pass on our thanks to him and we would appreciate letting your company know how wonderful he is!! our trip to Sri Lanka went very well and we are grateful

Just to let you know our trip to Sri Lanka went very well and we are grateful to you to organise this for us. I just wanted to feedback to you that you were very kind and accomodating in helping us organise this trip. The guide, Ignatius and the driver were very good and helpful - the hotels were of a high standard, clean and welcoming though we only a short time in a few of them and unable to use the facilities. However where we stayed for more than a day at both Eden Resort & Spa in Beruwela and the Galle Face in Colombo - the staff and facilities were excellent. The only negative feedback I can give is that for vegetarians even though the choice is there it gets a bit mundane as its the same everyday especially if one does not eat seafood and its worse if one does not eat eggs!. You in particular was most helpful and I feel that I needed to let you know and am happy to let your manager know. Thank you for your help - I have already passed the name of 'Elegnant Travels' to quite a few people and throughly recommend you.

Thank you for booking such an enjoyable holiday for us

I just wanted to write and tell you how much we enjoyed the Cultural Triangle Tour that you booked for us. Everything went well from the moment we landed at Colombo airport; we were met at the airport by representatives and taken to our hotel The Golden Star in Negombo. Next morning our guide Hermal promptly arrived at our hotel looking very smart, ready to start our 6 day tour. He had extensive knowledge of Sri Lanka & answered every question we asked him and knew so much about the history of Sri Lanka. After a busy first day visiting temples and ancient cities we arrived at our first chosen hotel which they warmly welcomed us with a refreshing fruit juice. Each morning Hermal would arrive promptly at the time arranged, the car having been cleaned inside and out ready for the day’s drive, this was done every day and sometimes it was very dirty having been through some very muddy roads. The tour came up to our expectations which we enjoyed very much, Hermal was polite & courteous & treated us with respect and we became firm friends & would certainly recommend him. The hotels which the tour recommends were excellent, the only exception being the Golden Star Hotel at Negombo which requires more cleanliness. Thank you Sanjay for booking such an enjoyable holiday for us, we shall always look back and remember what a nice time we had in Sri Lanka and thanks to Hermal for an excellent tour.

It is possible to rent a car in Sri Lanka but we advise against it as the roads are poor and the driving conditions challenging. Moreover, it is very economical to hire a driver in Sri Lanka, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the journey. Our tourist board approved English speaking drivers and not just drivers, they are qualified guides who possess an extensive knowledge of the country enabling them to double up as tour guides. We offer several vehicle types to hire in Sri Lanka for your convenience: a saloon car ideal for 2-3 people; a mini-van ideal for 4-6 people or a 4WD jeep for a more comfortable experience. Also, many of our customers enjoy doing part of their tour by train. The best scenic train journey in Sri Lanka is the train journey between Colombo and Badulla which stops at Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Most visitors take the Kandy - Nuwara Eliya or Nuwara Eliya - Colombo journey. The train journey from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy or Colombo makes an interesting alternative to the car. The journey time is much the same, but the scenery is even more spectacular. Travel in the 1st class observation car is highly recommended, and if possible on an InterCity Express train. You can reserve seats through travelSrilanka.co.uk and arrange for your driver to follow the train with your luggage so you don’t have to worry about hauling it all on board. Climatically speaking, the best time to go to Sri Lanka is the driest seasons in Sri Lanka which is from December to March for the west coast, the south coast and the Hill Country, and from April to September for the ancient cities region and the east coast. But last few years, as same as rest of the world, the weather patterns in Sri Lanka have change significantly. So be ready to experience dry weather during the rainy season and vice versa. Great thing about Sri Lanka weather is even when it is clouded over its still hot and getting tanned. When the rain comes, majority of time it’s only for couple hours and then the sun shines – this gives a cool breeze and a tropical feeling which is magical. Sri Lanka’s climate means that it is always the ‘right’ beach season somewhere on the coast. The weather doesn’t follow strict rules, though – it often seems to be raining where it should be sunny and sunny where it should be raining. Sri Lanka monsoon season varies for different parts of the country and there are different types of monsoon in Sri Lanka. Southwest Monsoon - arrives in May bringing rains to south and central areas. During this time, temperatures can soar above 35 Celsius in the coastal regions of the south. Northeast Monsoon arrives in October and lasts until January. The wet season turns the northern countryside lush green with tropical vegetation and the vibrant colours can make this a wonderful time to visit despite the rain. Inter-Monsoon brings rain and thunderstorms to south and central areas during September and November. More on Tailor Made Sri Lank Tours.
