About Sri Lanka - Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

Regions: hill-country
Main Article: Sri Lanka Golf
The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club covers public parkland that runs through much of the centre of the small town. Situated almost 2000 meters above sea level this championship course is one of Asia's finest and most challenging for players of all ability. A hilly and scenic course with tight fairways and some dense rough, it has some interesting holes at least six of which involve water.

Nuwara-Eliya is at the heart of the southern hill country, Sri Lanka’s highest town and a favourite hill station during British colonial period. Nuwara-Eliya is renowned for its perennial spring-like climate, carpets of lush green tea, 18 hole golf course, Little England, Victoria Park and more.

A Scottish soldier of the Golan Highlanders built the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and its magnificent course for the British serviceman and officials stationed here in 1889. Play golf in Nuwara Eliya and you’ll be transported back in time a hundred years to Sri Lanka’s colonial days. At times you might even feel like you’re in the Scottish Highlands.

The clubhouse in the centre of the town can be reached very easily by taxi or tuk tuk (three wheeler) at little cost from all of our hotels in Nuwara Eliya. Golf Club and shoe hire are available at reasonable cost and there is always a caddy on hand to offer essential local knowledge and to ease the burden by carrying your clubs. We recommend pre booking and we would be pleased to make arrangements on your behalf.

Holes: 18 Championship Golf Course, Length: 5,528 meters (6056 yards), Par: 71

Fairways

Its length at 5,528 meters (par 71) and its narrow fairways make it extremely challenging and provide ample reward to the straight driver. Providing a delightful environmental green belt to the town, the course is basically divided into three parts:

1. The "Brocas Meads' Holes - the area was once a swamp and now consists of the holes in front of the Club House, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 16th, 17th, 18th to which may be added the 15th hole which lies over the road on the side of the Club House.

2. The River Holes - in the playing of which a stream has to be crossed no less than 10 times through inaccuracy may lead to further encounters. These are the 4th - 11th holes.

3. "Switzerland" - the 3 hilly testing holes 12th, 13th, 14th - coming as they do at a critical stage in a round make or more often mar a card.

From the 1st tee this course rewards straight hitting. It is a testing tee shot, made all the more tense because you stand in full view of the clubhouse. However any dropped shots on the first can be clawed back on the par 5, 2nd, where the green is accessible in two. The par 5, 6th, is the longest hole in Sri Lanka; with a wide fairway it presents the ideal opportunity to pull out the driver and open up your shoulders. Careful with that driver though because the fairways are lined with well-established trees, a slightly wayward shot brings these into play. If you manage to stay clear of the trees further challenges lie in the crags and creeks that bisect the fairways and the remorseless gorse and bunkers, causing many a curse and bogey. The challenging 12th, 13th and 14th holes are referred to as ‘Little Switzerland’ due to their resembling hills. It is also leopard country so let that be warning enough to keep the ball on the fairway.

Facilities

The clubhouse and bar is an atmospheric place to enjoy a drink and meal after your round. It is full of character and colonial history. Little has changed since the founding of the club and you can even enjoy a log fire on cooler evenings. Golf Club and shoe hire are available at reasonable cost and there is always a caddy on hand to offer essential local knowledge and to ease the burden by carrying your clubs. We recommend pre booking and we would be pleased to make arrangements on your behalf.

Facts for the visitor

• Nuwara Eliya is 160km from Colombo approximately 5 hours drive. However travelSrilanka.co.uk would suggest coming from Kandy which is about 2.5 hours drive. Alternatively, experience one of the world’s great rail journeys from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya which will be about 3.5 hours. The SriLankan Air Taxi also flies to Nuwara Eliya from Kandy or Colombo.

• There is no time of year ‘when not to come’ to Nuwara Eliya. The season in Nuwara Eliya is April and this is best avoided as accommodation is at a premium. It is at this time that Sri Lankans flock to the town to escape the heat. December to March traditionally has the best weather but travel here in the low season and have the town to yourself.

• Normal golfing dress codes are in place on the course. ‘Smart dress’ is required in the clubhouse. The ‘Players Bar’ has a more relaxed dress code. There is also a billiard room.

• There are a number of major competitions held at Nuwara Eliya so check with travelSrilanka.co.uk before booking your stay.

• Other than the golf course, there are plenty more attractions and activities to keep you busy. Visit the Pedro Tea Estate and discover the origins of your morning pot of tea. For gardeners there is Hakgala gardens, 27 acres overflowing with roses and ferns. There are a number of walks one can undertake. On the edge of the town is Mt Pidurutalagala (Sri Lanka’s highest mountain). Explore the eucalyptus jungle and rare indigenous cloud forest on the slopes of this peak, for birdlife and exotic plants. Alternatively, be more adventurous and use Nuwara Eliya as a starting point for a Horton Plain safari or expedition to the summit of Adam’s Peak.
