Chaaya Citadel Hotel - Introduction
Recently refurbished, Chaaya Citadel offers luxurious accommodation with scenic views of the graceful Mahaweli River. Chaaya Citadel Kandy is constructed in the place of the former Dunuvila Wallauwa (The ancestral home of the Dunivila family). Dunuvila, one of the King's Ministers, lived here with his extended family.
Chaaya Citadel provides tranquil surroundings away from the busy city of Kandy. With its riverside setting, it is a great place to relax and unwind. And, as the legend goes the King of Kandy would make it a point to break journey at this very location whenever he passed by in his boat. It is said that he did not simply stop to rest, but to bathe in the river and spend some time at the Chaaya Citadel Wallauwa.

Chaaya Citadel sits at the edge of the Mahaweli River on the northern outskirts of Kandy - approx 20 minute drive from the Kandy town. Kandy is a 3-hour drive from Colombo and it retains a traditional Sri Lankan lifestyle. In the past referred to Kandy as the Kandyan kingdom, located 488 meters above sea level, is the last stronghold of the Sri Lankan monarchy and to this day, the city stands strong in the knowledge of this proud legacy.
From 1590, for 225 years, Kandy was the Capital city, the kingdom of the island and home to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha.
The kingdom held strong against invasions by the Portuguese and the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries, respectively, and even against the British in the 19th century.

Chaaya Citadel Hotel was full refurbished in October 2006. Today it has luxurious and comfortable ensuite rooms. Most of the rooms face the Mahaweli River and provides scenic views from the private balcony. The interiors are furnished with colours and fabrics that are in keeping with traditional Kandyan style.
