A few structures from the time of the kingdoms do still stand and serve as historical and cultural sites for the region. The region is famous for being home to the engineering marvel of the ancients of Sri Lanka: The Tissa Weva (Tissa Lake), the lake also dates back to the times of the Ruhuna Kingdom. The region’s main purpose currently is to serve as starting point for visits to Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park and the Religious sites of Kataragama.
