| | | | | | | | | | | Introduction | | The Hill Club of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka was founded in 1876 by a homesick British Coffee Planter, as a 'home' away from home and exclusive social club, and today, the Hill Club still has an active club membership which helps to preserve a distinctive atmosphere, with comfortable rooms and all modern facilities. The Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya is perhaps one of the few remaining monuments that remind you of the colonial occupation of Sri Lanka. The colonial architectural features of this mansion is impressive - wooden staircases, high roofs, hardwood floors, fire places and antique furniture which are all well maintained.
During the day enjoy a stroll around the carefully maintained grounds or play a game of tennis at the tennis courts, in the evening partake in a frame of billiards in the wood panelled games room or linger over a liqueur in the bar. At the Hill Club, much has changed over the years making it more relaxing for those spending a holiday here but certain club rules and regulations still continue. Today guests have the option of dining at the member's dining room which has a formal dress code for dinner (gentlemen over 18 are expected to wear jacket and tie and appropriate formal wear is expected of ladies), or in a casual dining room amidst a more informal ambience. Children under the age of five are not permitted within the clubhouse, but separate family holiday chalets with an adjoining play area is available within the extensive gardens for families travelling with young children.
The service at the Hill Club is excellent and some of the staff has many decades of service. Special touches such as the hot water bottle that is kept between the bed sheets when turning down the beds at night, and the relaxing scent of cinnamon and pine that permeates through the property, gives the Hill Club a welcoming feel. | | | | Location Details | | | The Hill Club is in Nuwara Eliya, or Little England as it is also aptly referred to, is Sri Lanka's most popular holiday resort.
