Sri Lanka's ancient history has a page devoted to the world of "Ayurveda" meaning the science of life and is the most scientific and complete system of preventative and curative medical care known to mankind. Ayurveda is derived from Sanskrit...'Ayur' meaning 'life' and 'Veda' meaning 'science or knowledge'.
During the last two millennia most of the island's population have depended on this traditional medicine with its reliance on natural plants, herbs and oils. Ayurveda simply has two aims: to preserve health and cure a body afflicted by disease and it focuses on four factors, which are inter-related: the body, the mind, the consciousness (or soul) and the pancharnahabuhuta (which refers to the 5 great elements - fire, water; air, earth and space). It is said that a blend of these factors determines the physical constitution of living beings. Generally herbal medications are an amalgamation of various herbs ground in a pestle, prepared to the time tested pharmaceutical procedures recommended in Ayurveda.
Through internal use (dietary and other) and external applications such as bathing and massage, these ancient medicines do contribute a great deal to the general well being of mind and body - you only have to notice that many Sri Lankans live to a ripe old age in good physical condition.
So if you fancy the alternative therapy in Medicine, and are in the mood to experience the world of Ayurveda... take a peep at the many resorts in this island that will care for life. It's no wonder that every time you meet the people of this beautiful island they greet you with their hands clasped together and a gentle bow of the head saying "Ayubowan" meaning "may you be blessed with the gift of long life!"
