Holidays to Sri Lanka - Highlights

Sri Lanka is an island unlike any other on earth; it consists of collection of attributes that make it one of the finest locations to go for a holiday to get away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life and simply unwind in an environment of true tropical tranquillity and unparalleled beauty.

Made up of many races cultures and creeds the populace of the island has blended into a unique mix of the best Asia has to offer, resulting in some of the most friendliest and endearing people you will ever meet. Loving and caring, Sri Lankans are ever willing to assist anyone regardless of where they are from.

Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity and heritage goes back hundreds of years making the island a treasure trove for those interested in ancient artefacts and the development of south Asian techniques such as Ayurveda or the mastery the ancients possessed over such avenues like engineering, agriculture and art resulting in the creation of some of the world’s most breathtakingly complex and beautiful structures which are dotted throughout the island, most of which are concentrated within the cultural triangle which encompasses the areas of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.

Sri Lanka has had much influence from the rest of the world, most notably Europe and particularly from the Portuguese, Dutch and British, visible fingerprints of these Colonial cultures are prevalent in the architecture of old forts, villas and manors scattered along Sri Lanka’s coasts and in the highlands or as the locals call it the ‘upcountry’. Given the blend of local and international imprints all over Sri Lanka; adventure, touring and trekking holidays and tours are a common and wise choice to see most of the Island during the length of a standard holiday.

Sri Lanka boasts a highly diverse eco system consisting of many environments such as; the tropical jungles of the Sinharaja rainforest and Yala National Park, the brisk misty climes of the hill country in Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela and Haputale and the dry lands of Jaffna up north. The island experiences two monsoons a year namely the ‘Maha’ or northeast and ‘Yala’ or southwest monsoons which take place during the months of December to March and June to October respectively. These diverse combinations of climatic conditions allows for a myriad plant and animal species to thrive in Sri Lanka regardless of locational boundaries. The best locations to experience Sri Lanka’s natural wealth and diversity is in its nature sanctuaries namely the Uda Walawe National Park, Yala National Park, Sinharaja rain forest, Minneriya National Park and the Wilpattu National Park all of which are abundantly populated with various species of flora and fauna a good bit of which is endemic to Sri Lanka. The Island has risen to fame in the aquatic fauna category too; in the regions of Dondra Head and Mirissa in the south and Trincomale in the east have become major whale and dolphin watching zones during the months of December to January and April for the south (Dondra Head and Mirissa) and February to March for the East (Trincomale).

Aside from a rich plethora of wildlife, heritage and cultural diversity Sri Lanka is fast rising in the ranks of one of the world’s top beach holiday destinations. Featuring some of the finest golden and white sand beaches in Asia coupled with year round sunshine and tropical weather conditions Sri Lanka’s prim beach hotspots are located in Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Arugam Bay and Nilaveli a wide selection of holidays and tours to these areas will give you the ultimate Sri Lanka beach holiday experience. The islands beaches are lined with various standards of accommodations ranging from luxury and boutique hotels and resorts to quaint yet vibrant holiday homes and guest houses many of which serve up some of the finest seafood dishes you have ever sampled, many accommodations allow their guests to select their sea food from the catch of the day and sometimes even instruct their guests in the traditional ways of preparing prime tropical seafood.

Sri Lanka is a true island of diversity and lives up to its unique title, ‘The Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, the island and its populace forge ever forward in this modern day and age, but still manages to maintain the delicate balance of keeping with their deep and colourful history while evolving with the rest of the world. One thing is for sure though; Sri Lanka will always be the unmatchable tropical paradise where holidays are meant to be experienced in.
