About Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka Wildlife

Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Wildlife
A land where you can come face to face with a wild elephant, watch the savage grace of a leopard, see a nesting turtle lay its eggs on the beach, help baby turtles to start their first journey into the sea, be awed by the brilliant display of a peacock or catch sight of orchids festooning a giant rainforest tree, may seem like a dream.

But in Sri Lanka this is a reality, for nature has blessed the island with a disproportionate abundance. Despite its small size, it has one of the richest biodiversities of any country in the world. This astounding diversity is due to its dramatically different terrains, ranging from coastal plains and mangroves to dripping rainforests, from the arid dry zone to the emerald forests and spring like temperature of the Hill-Country.

Few things about Sri Lanka Wildlife history and scale:
What was probably the world's first wildlife sanctuary was created here in the 2rd century BC by a king who converted to Buddhism.
Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage has been caring for orphaned elephants for more than 30 years.
Yala National Park has highest density of leopard in this world.
Sinharaja Rainforest is protected as a UNECSCO World Heritage Site.
An astonishing 170 species of birds arrive in the island from mid-August.
Sri Lanka has a network of National Parks, Nature Reserves (excluding Strict Nature Reserves where visitors are not permitted) and Wildlife Sanctuaries.

Sri Lanka Bird Watching

Sri Lanka boasts over 400 bird species, of which 21 are endemic (that is unique to Sri Lanka), while others are found only in adjacent southern India. A tropical climate, long isolation from the Asia mainland and a diversity of habitats have helped to endow Sri Lanka with an astonishing abundance of birdlife. A typical Sri Lanka Bird Watching tour could take in an ancient city, botanical gardens, national parks, nature reserves or wildlife sanctuary. Click here to find out more about Sri Lanka Bird Watching .

Sri Lanka Whale Watching

Whale Watching in Sri Lanka was discovered in April 2006, when pair of British volunteers stumbled across whales in the southern waters. Since them, a high concentration of blue whales and sperm whales have been spotted in the seas off Dondra Head along the deep south coast of Sri Lanka, during the months of December to April. The frequency as well as the proximity to the shore makes Sri Lanka one of the easiest places in the world to spot blue or sperm whales. Click here to find out more about Sri Lanka Whale Watching .

Sri Lanka Dolphin Watching

Dolphins are found worldwide but more so in the shores of Sri Lanka. The best places to the dolphins in Sri Lanka are in the seas off Dondra Pint (Mirissa) along the deep south coast of Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya in thenorthwest coast and Trincomalee in thenortheast coast. The frequency as well as the proximity to the shore makes Sri Lanka one of the easiest places in the world to spot dolphins. Click here to find out more about Sri Lanka Dolphin Watching .

Sri Lanka Leopard

A recent study has shown that Sri Lanka has one of the highest recorded densities of leopards in the world, although this animal is still considered to be endangered. The Sri Lanka Leopard is an endangered subspecies native to the island. Although leopards are smaller than tigers and lions, they are the ultimate Big Cat in terms of adaptability, and are unmatched as a predator. Because leopards are some of the planet's most elusive creatures, sighting one is a rare delight. Click here to find out more about Sri Lanka Leopard .

Sri Lanka Elephant

Sri Lanka has spectacular National Parks to rival any African safari, with wild herds of elephants in their natural habitat. But elephants are endangered, and although they are protected by law, they continue to be at risk. There are over 2500 wild elephants in Sri Lanka, compared with 12,000 at the beginning of the 20th century. Click here to find out more about Sri Lanka Elephant .

Sri Lanka Jeep Safaris

Sri Lanka is one of the most biologically diverse countries in Asia, an asset best reflected in her national parks and reserves, home to thousands of different species from rare butterflies, brightly coloured birds and iridescent tree frogs, to lumbering elephants, slothful bears and elusive leopards. A jeep safari will afford you the unforgettable opportunity to see some of the island’s most celebrated creatures. We provide jeep safaris from most national parks but most viewed national parks are Minneriya National Park, Udawalawe National Park , and Yala National Park .

Sri Lanka National Parks
